A candidate legume pollinator, Osmia sanrafaelae parker (Hymenoptera: Megachilldae)*

Frank D. Parker

A population (50 males, 50 females) of the megachilid bee, Osmia sanrafaelae, increased its population 11-fold in a cage (6 m x 6 m x 2 m) in which the only source of forage was alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Nests were built in laminated pine blocks with 9-mm holes containing drinking straws. Mean numbers of pods/stem and seeds/pod, and mean seed weights for M. sativa plants growing in the cage were similar to those for Plants growing outside the cage in a crop pollinated by Megachile rotundata. Data on numbers of nests and cells produced per female and mortality factors are presented, and attributes of O. sanrafaelae that may make it manageable are discussed.
